Rick’s 9th Annual Southern Boil

This wonderful seafood dish is customarily a combination of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes, and spices.  However, Rick, at Clarion Gardens embellishes his boil with crab and clams and it’s all served with a bowl of butter for dipping and a side of bread.

A “Low Country Boil” or “A Southern Boil” was introduced by a National Guardsman by the name of Richard Gay, who needed to cook a meal for 100 soldiers. (The seafood delight originated from his family.) Everyone loved the stew and the guardsmen teasingly named the concoction “Frogmore Stew”, which was the name of Richard Gay’s hometown in South Carolina.

Frogmore is an unincorporated low country community on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County and is primarily rural. It boasts of a post office on one side of the road and a two-story white country store on the other.

Even though this dish is still traditionally considered “Frogmore Stew” it is now more commonly known as “Low Country Boil” or as Rick calls it, “A Southern Boil.” It commonly is served by spreading the seafood on tables covered with newspaper… but we are bit fancier, and we fill trays with tons of the stew and you serve yourself.


You are invited to our 9th Annual Southern Boil to be held on August 27th at 7:00 p.m. We have guests that return over and over again for this event. We encourage you to pre-register early because this event has been so popular in the past that it fills up quickly.

P.S. Dress code?  You can wear whatever you desire, but just come casual. Some of our long-time guests love to dress up in “Red Neck” attire, which makes the event especially interesting as there are some wild get-ups. So don’t be shy… dress up and “Come On Down.”  And remember, no silverware allowed… we provide bibs, butter, and a damp towel for those buttery fingers.
